Volts to Amps

Welcome to volts to amps, our website about the conversion of voltage (V) in volts to the electric current (I) measured in amperes (“amps”).

To change voltage to amperage we can either apply Ohm’ law which is I = V / R; R is the resistance of an electrical conductor measured in ohm. Or we use the formula I = P / V; P is the electrical Power in watt.

W or Ω?

The unit symbols for these SI base or derived units are as follows: V for volts, A for amperes, Ω for ohm and W for watt. Thus, we can write the formulas as I(A) = V(V) / R(Ω) = P(W) / V(V). This essentially means that there are two different ways to convert volts to amps, and that we have to either use ohm or watt as there is no direct relationship between volts and amps.

Convert Volts to Amps

As follows from the introduction, we can determine the amps using the power or the resistance. In other words, either the watts or the value in ohm must be known to get volts in amps.

Change Volts to Amps with Watts

To answer how many amps in a volt by means of watt use I(A) = P(W) / V(V), dividing the power by the voltage. For example, assumed V = 100 V and P = 60 W we obtain I = 60 / 100 = 0.6 A.

Change Volts to Amps with Ohm

To answer how many amps in a volt by means of ohm use I(A) = V(V) / R(Ω), dividing the voltage by the resistance. For example, assumed V = 100 V and R = 40 Ω we obtain I = 100 / 40 = 2.5 A.

In any case, it is advisable to use our converter in the next section.
